CLIMATE TECH GROWTH AND MARKETING STATISTICS, 2026

The commercial gap, stage by stage

Last Updated October 2026

Climate tech companies rarely fail because the technology does not work. They fail in the distance between a proven technology and a proven business. This page collects the 2026 numbers that describe that distance, in the order a company crosses it.

The 2026 market is harder than the one most climate companies planned for. Capital is still flowing, but it goes to fewer, larger rounds, and the number of investors able to lead a round has fallen. The time between Series A and Series B has stretched to nearly three years, and far fewer companies make the step. The buyer has changed from a sustainability lead to a committee that includes finance, procurement and operations. Federal policy has withdrawn support, while deployment of solar, storage and grid equipment has reached record levels. A company's position depends on which of those currents it sits in.

Marketing and go-to-market strategy are the tools a company has for adapting to those conditions without waiting for them to change. A chosen segment shortens the sales cycle. A business case written for the CFO gets a deal through a committee that the sustainability pitch stalls in. Reference customers and documented proof price the next round, or make it unnecessary. Positioning inside the category a buyer already budgets for, grid reliability or storage rather than decarbonization, finds money that exists. The numbers below are organized as five stages a company passes through, with the operating conditions set out first, so that each decision can be read against the data that bears on it.

Most of what this page describes shows up inside a company as the same gap: someone owns every marketing task and no one owns the strategy. The Ownership Gap diagnostic is free, asks eight questions, and tells you whether your company has it.

Stage 1Conditions: policy, deployment and cost

Deployment is at record levels while federal support is being withdrawn. Solar and storage led the largest quarter of US clean power additions on record, and energy investment worldwide is still rising. In the same quarter, developers canceled more announced projects than in any quarter before, and clean energy employment fell for the first time since the pandemic. Where a company's product sits relative to that line decides whether its buyers are accelerating or waiting.

For a commercial team, the buyer's urgency is now tied to specific credit deadlines and specific categories rather than to a general policy direction.

Statistic What it means Source
Solar and wind projects that began construction by July 4, 2026 keep federal tax credit eligibility; later projects must start production by December 31, 2027. The storage investment tax credit survives through 2033. These are the dates that create urgency in a sales conversation. A buyer with a project that qualifies has a reason to sign this quarter; one that misses the window has a reason to wait. Storage has the longest runway of the three. Clean Investment Monitor; Lazard (2026)
Developers added 17.1 GW of US clean power in Q2 2026, up 45% on Q2 2025; the development pipeline hit a record 205 GW, including 111 GW of utility-scale solar and 56 GW of storage. Solar and storage are the growth categories. A product that sells into either has a buyer with a build schedule and a budget already approved. ACP Clean Power Quarterly (2026)
The US installed a record 18.9 GWh of battery storage in Q2 2026, up 17%. Residential storage beat residential solar for a second straight quarter and was 75% of the distributed category. Storage is now its own market, not an add-on to solar. ACP and Wood Mackenzie, US Energy Storage Monitor (2026); Clean Investment Monitor
Solar and storage made up 70% of new US generating capacity in the first half of 2026. Utility-scale solar rose 61%; residential fell 12%. Utility and commercial buyers are growing while the residential channel shrinks. A company selling through installers is in the shrinking half. SEIA and Wood Mackenzie, Solar Market Insight Q3 2026
Developers canceled about $17B of announced clean electricity and industrial projects in Q2 2026, the highest quarter on record. Wind announcements fell to $300M, the lowest since tracking began in 2018. Announced projects are being pulled, so a pipeline figure overstates what will get built. Qualify a prospect's project on financing and credit status before counting it. Clean Investment Monitor (2026)
US clean energy and transportation investment reached $75B in Q2 2026, up 22% from Q1; $277B over the past four quarters. Deployment demand exists. The money is being spent, mostly by households and businesses, on mature technology. Clean Investment Monitor, US Q2 2026 update; CIM US dashboard
LCOE rose for every technology in 2026 on capital costs, rates, tariffs and supply-chain repricing. Unsubsidized utility solar averaged $69/MWh, up 18%. New-build gas combined cycle reached a 15-year high. Unsubsidized renewables remain the cheapest new-build generation in the US. The cost case for clean generation still holds, but the margin over gas has narrowed and buyers know it. A pitch that leans on "cheapest" needs the current numbers, not last year's. Lazard LCOE+ 2026; Lazard research
More than 50 US federal actions since the start of 2024, most in 2025, have hurt climate research, funding and permitting. Government is not a reliable customer or funder for the next planning cycle. SVB Future of Climate Tech (2026)
E2 tracked 216 major clean energy projects canceled, closed or downsized from January 2025 through May 2026, with modeled costs of 468,000 jobs and $68.2B in private capital during construction. Policy risk is now a line item in every buyer's evaluation, and it is in the lender's too. E2, One Year Since the One Big Beautiful Bill (2026)
The US clean energy workforce fell by 36,949 jobs in 2025 to 3.52 million, the first annual loss since the pandemic. Only storage and grid, and biofuels, added jobs. Clean energy still employs more than 3.5 million people against 958,000 in oil and gas. The sector is contracting at the edges and growing in storage and grid. Hiring plans should follow the same line. E2 Clean Jobs America 2026, initial findings
Global energy investment is set to reach $3.4T in 2026, up 5%. Clean energy takes $2.2T, almost double fossil fuels. Grids drew $483B in 2025. The world market is still growing. Grid is the largest single destination for capital after generation. IEA World Energy Investment 2026; BloombergNEF (2026)
Global energy transition investment hit a record $2.3T in 2025, up 8%. Electrified transport led at $893B. Renewable energy investment fell 9.5% to $690B. Data center investment was about half a trillion dollars. Transport and data center load are where growth is. Pure renewables generation is flat to down. BloombergNEF, Energy Transition Investment Trends 2026

Stage 2Raise: capital is available, concentrated, and slower to reach you

Total funding has held up, but who receives funding has changed. In the first half of 2026 the average round nearly doubled while deal count fell to a record low, and the largest rounds took close to two-thirds of all capital. The number of active investors fell, late-stage investors most of all. Funds that led 2022 and 2023 Series A rounds often raised a first close and did not raise the rest.

For a company already operating, the figures below describe a market in which the next priced round is not a reliable plan. The sections that follow show what companies did instead.

Statistic What it means Source
The number of climate investors fell 11% in 2025. Late-stage investors fell 14% and growth investors 13%. Fewer people can lead your next round than could lead your last one. The list of funds worth a conversation is shorter, and each conversation carries more weight. Sightline Climate (2026)
Only 57% of targeted climate fund capital closed in 2025; the US close rate was 35%, Europe's 71%. VC close rates fell to 39%, the lowest of any fund type. Many of the funds that invested in 2023 and 2024 cannot follow on. Ask your board whether yours can before building a plan around an extension. Sightline Climate, Dry Powder and New Funds (April 2026)
Deals under $50M fell 20% in 2025. $1B+ rounds rose from four to six and deployed $6.7B. Equity deals fell 18%; grant deals fell 51%. Grants are no longer a bridge. The sub-$50M round, which is the round most operating companies need, is the one getting harder. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Climate tech raised $41.3B in H1 2026, up slightly from $43.6B in H1 2025, while deal count fell to its lowest on record. The average round rose from $18M to $27M. A company raising a $10M round is now below the average and competing for attention against rounds three times its size. Net Zero Insights (H1 2026); Latitude Media
The largest rounds took nearly 65% of all climate tech funding in H1 2026. Debt was roughly a quarter of funding, up from under 10% in 2021 and 2022. Capital is going to companies that already look like winners, and more of it is debt, which needs cash flow to service. Both favor companies with revenue over companies with a roadmap. Net Zero Insights (2026)
Pre-seed and seed equity funding hit a five-year low of $3.3B in 2025. Early-stage (A and B) equity fell from $31.8B in 2022 to $17.1B in 2025; deal count fell from 1,835 to 1,082. Late-stage held near $24B. The squeeze is at the early and middle stages, where most operating companies sit. Net Zero Insights, State of Climate Tech 2025
Investable climate dry powder stood at $90B in Q1 2026, down from a $112B peak in Q1 2025. 179 climate funds closed $92B in 2025, double 2024. Infrastructure funds were 77% of new capital. The average climate VC fund shrank from $174M to $160M. Record fundraising went to infrastructure, which buys built assets, not companies. Venture dry powder is thinning while the number of venture funds stays high. Sightline Climate, Dry Powder and New Funds (April 2026)
Ten US deals, under 1% of all deals, took 28% of US climate tech VC investment in 2025; the top 50 took 59%. US climate VC hit $29B in 2025, up 44%. Headline growth is driven by a few dozen companies. The median company's odds did not improve. SVB Future of Climate Tech (2026)
Climate tech venture and growth investment was $40.5B in 2025, up 8%, with deal count down 18% to 1,545. Energy took 36% at $14.4B, a three-year high. Six of the ten largest deals went to energy security and resilience. Investors are funding energy, resilience and reliability. Sightline Climate, 2025 Climate Tech Investment Trends
US climate tech funding rose 27% in 2025. Europe fell 13% to $10.1B, its lowest since 2020. The US stayed the largest market in H1 2026; China passed Europe for second. US companies raised more in 2025 despite policy. European companies face a tighter market. Sightline Climate (2026); Net Zero Insights (2026)
Climate tech funds from the 2020 to 2024 vintages posted an IRR 9 points higher than overall VC. Returns have been good, but new capital is going elsewhere. SVB press release, Future of Climate Tech 2025

Stage 3Prove: the gap between Series A and Series B is where companies stall

The step from Series A to Series B used to take about two years. It now takes close to three, and far fewer companies make it. For hard tech the path to commercial readiness has lengthened too, with more rounds and more years needed and a smaller share of companies arriving. The round that follows is priced on commercial evidence generated in between.

Statistic What it means Source
80% fewer companies moved from Series A to Series B in 2025 than in 2022, and those that did needed six more months. Nearly 50% fewer moved from seed to A. The A-to-B step is the narrowest point in the funnel. A company sitting between those rounds should assume it will be there longer than its model says. Net Zero Insights, State of Climate Tech 2025
Average time from first Series A to first Series B rose from 2.1 years in 2020 to 2.8 years in 2025. Series A deal volume has fallen for three straight years. Plan for three years of operating between rounds, not eighteen months. That changes how much revenue the plan has to produce on its own. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Only 13.1% of hard tech companies at the R&D stage in 2022 reached commercial readiness by 2025. Moving from demonstration to commercial readiness took 3.7 years for companies starting in 2022 and 6.1 years for those starting in 2025. Commercial readiness is the scarce milestone. Marketing's job during this stage is producing the customer evidence that gets a company there and proves it did. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Seed investment fell 20% and Series A fell 7% in 2025; Series A deal count fell 22%. Series B rose 7% on a few mega-deals. Series C deal count fell 44% to 45 deals, the lowest tracked; growth-stage investment rose 78%. Series B now looks like late-stage funding, with late-stage expectations about revenue. Series C has nearly disappeared as a distinct step. Sightline Climate (2026)
Hard tech companies now need about five equity rounds to reach commercial readiness, up from 4.7 in 2023. Debt financing for hard tech fell roughly 70% in 2025. Companies take on more dilution and less debt to reach the same milestone. Net Zero Insights (2025)
For 2020 and 2021 seed cohorts, 15% to 25% raised a Series A within years two and three. For 2022 and 2023 cohorts, 5% to 12%. Recent cohorts are graduating at roughly half the earlier rate. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Seed and Series A took 30% of US climate tech VC investment in 2025, down six points from 2024. Share of capital is moving away from the stages where companies prove themselves. SVB Future of Climate Tech (2026)
Seed rounds have grown 73% in value since 2021 while shrinking to a record-low share of equity deals. Seed rounds are fewer and larger, so companies outside them are being passed over. Latitude Media, reporting Net Zero Insights (2026)

Stage 4Sell: the buyer changed, and demand moved

Three things happened to the climate tech buyer. The sustainability lead stopped being the decision-maker; finance, legal, procurement and operations joined the process. Banks and governments withdrew while corporates stayed, which makes the industrial strategic the most reliable customer, partner and acquirer. And demand concentrated in energy, grid, storage and power for data centers, which is where a company's category has to be defined if it wants a budget to sell into.

Buying behavior changed with it. Buyers now start with an AI summary of what is public about a vendor and end with a sales rep who confirms it.

Statistic What it means Source
Climate tech deals now involve finance, legal, procurement and operations teams, not just sustainability teams. Marketing that arms only the sustainability champion neglects the very people who are able to kill the deal. The Climate Hub, 2026 Climate Tech Marketing Report
An average of 13 people take part in a B2B buying decision; 89% of purchases involve two or more departments; 86% of purchases stall; 81% of buyers are dissatisfied with the provider they chose. Consensus is the sales problem. Content has to work for people you never meet, in the meetings you are not invited to. Forrester, The State of Business Buying 2024
74% of B2B buying teams show unhealthy conflict during the decision process. Expect the buying group to be split before you arrive. Gartner press release (2025)
Net Zero Insights names demand as the defining challenge of 2025: customers hesitate over cost, long deployment cycles and unclear policy. The constraint has moved from supply of capital to willingness of buyers. The three hesitations named are the three objections a sales conversation has to answer in advance. Net Zero Insights, State of Climate Tech 2025
Corporate strategics were 13.8% of climate tech deal participants in 2025. Their participation fell 2.2% year over year; banks fell 30%; governments fell 50.7%. Corporates are the counterparty that stayed. When banks and governments cut their participation by a third and a half, corporate participation barely moved, which makes the industrial strategic the most reliable customer, partner and investor a company at this size can plan around. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Corporate offtakes for hard tech ran 35% to 40% higher than the broader climate tech market from 2021 to 2025. Strategic investors made 20% to 30% more hard tech deals a year than the market overall. For hard tech, the customer contract and the strategic investor are often the same relationship. Selling well to a corporate is also how the next round gets led. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Fortune 500 companies active in climate tech shifted from 2022 to 2025 toward energy, semiconductors, materials and capital goods, and away from consumer and asset-light sectors. Google, Amazon and Meta signed nuclear PPAs in 2025 to power data centers. Strategics pulled back from green hydrogen and long-duration storage. The corporate buyer is an industrial with a capital plan. Sectors with long commercial timelines lost their strategic backing. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Power generation was the only major subsector where US climate tech deal activity grew in 2025. Position inside power, grid or storage if the product allows it. SVB Future of Climate Tech (2026)
67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free buying experience; 45% used AI tools during a recent purchase. The first impression is formed from what is public about you, summarized by a model. If pricing, proof and positioning are not written down where a model can find them, the summary is built from your competitor's. Gartner press release (2026)
69% of B2B buyers turn to sales reps to validate AI-generated insights. Gartner predicts that by 2030, 75% will prefer sales experiences that put human interaction ahead of AI. The sales call is now a validation step. Reps who can defend the numbers win it. Gartner (2026); Gartner (2025)

Stage 5Run: operate on the cash you have

The companies that survived 2025 cut burn, raised margins and extended runway without a round. Median runway for the smallest companies fell to eleven months, which leaves no room for marketing that cannot show up in pipeline inside that window. There is no public benchmark for climate tech marketing spend, sales cycle length or channel performance; the Gartner figure below is the closest cross-industry reference and is drawn mostly from companies far larger than the ones this page is written for.

Statistic What it means Source
Median cash runway for companies under $10M in revenue fell from 14 months in 2023 to 11 in 2025. For companies over $50M it rose from 17 to 24 months. A company at $5M to $20M is in the band with the least time. Eleven months is not long enough for a brand program to pay back, so every marketing dollar has to be traceable to pipeline inside the year. SVB (2026)
52% of cash-burning, VC-backed climate tech companies with under $50M in revenue cut net burn year over year in 2025. Half the cohort is already operating as if the next round may not come. SVB Future of Climate Tech (2026)
Median gross margin for US VC-backed climate tech rose 9 percentage points from 2023 to the end of 2025. Only 5% of companies are cash-flow positive, up from 2% in 2022. Unit economics improved. Profitability is still rare, which means most companies are still choosing between growth spend and runway every quarter. SVB (2026)
57% of US VC-backed climate tech companies needed to raise in the next 12 months as of early 2025. 60% had less than 12 months of runway in early 2024, against 53% of all tech. Climate companies have run shorter on cash than tech generally for at least two years. SVB press releases, Future of Climate Tech 2025 and 2024
76% of climate tech software companies and 65% of climate tech hardware companies improved EBITDA margin year over year in 2023. The efficiency turn began in 2023 and has continued. SVB press release (2024)
Marketing budgets average 7.8% of company revenue in 2026, up from 7.7% in 2025. A general reference point, not a target. Most respondents run companies over $1B in revenue, with the sales teams and brand equity that come with that size. Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey

Stage 6Exit: acquisitions, mostly small, mostly by incumbents

Exits held near record levels in 2025 and the first half of 2026 was the most active six months since 2021. Nearly all of them were acquisitions. Oil majors made none; incumbents bought small bolt-ons. The implication for a company at $5M to $100M is that the buyer it is selling to today is also its most likely acquirer, and that looking like a product line an incumbent is missing is a positioning decision made years before the deal.

Statistic What it means Source
Sightline counted 191 climate tech exits in 2025, down 5% from 2024's record 202. Acquisitions were 89%. IPOs rose 17%. SPACs fell to 4% of exits, from 42% in 2021. Nine in ten exits are acquisitions, so plan for that outcome rather than an IPO. Sightline Climate, 2025 Climate Tech Investment Trends
Oil majors made no startup acquisitions in 2025. M&A shifted to small bolt-ons by incumbents. Climate tech bankruptcies fell nearly 50%. Buyers are strategic industrials adding capability, not energy majors buying optionality as they did in earlier cycles. The acquirer wants a product line that fits a business it already runs. Sightline Climate (2026)
Acquired hard tech companies had raised a median of 4.0 equity rounds in 2021 and 7.1 by 2025. Hard tech's share of M&A fell from 12.1% to 6.1%; AI-enabled digital companies' share sat at 11.8% in 2025. Hard tech acquisitions happen later and less often. Software and data companies exit sooner. Net Zero Insights (2025)
H1 2026 was the most active six months for climate tech exits since 2021, led by energy companies and mostly M&A. X-energy listed on Nasdaq in April 2026 at an $11.9B valuation; Fervo went public in May 2026 in a $1.9B IPO. Public markets reopened for energy at scale. For everyone else, the path is still M&A. Latitude Media (2026)
Climate tech M&A counts held between 316 and 372 a year from 2021 through 2025. IPOs fell from 96 in 2021 to 55 in 2025. M&A volume is steady through the cycle. IPOs are not. Net Zero Insights (2025)
Climate tech has produced 302 unicorns and 24 decacorns, plus 216 companies with $100M or more in revenue. Dealroom tracks 1,542 acquisitions since 2010 worth $136.1B in disclosed value. The category has produced outcomes. Most were acquisitions below headline size. Dealroom Climate Guide (2026)

What the numbers mean at your stage

The same data reads differently depending on where a company sits. Three short reads follow.

Before the Series B

The step in front of you is the narrowest in the market: 80% fewer graduations than 2022, 2.8 years between rounds, and a 39% close rate among the venture funds that might lead. Treat the gap as a commercial plan with dates. Decide what has to be true about customers at month 12, 24 and 30, and run marketing to produce that evidence: named reference customers, a repeatable sales motion in one segment, and a case study built while the deal closes. Confirm whether your current investors have reserves before you assume an extension.

$5M to $20M in revenue

You have pipeline and eleven to fourteen months of runway. The companies in your cohort that survived cut burn and raised margins rather than raising rounds. Marketing's output has to be cash, which means fewer customers at higher margin, a shorter cycle, and contract terms that fund working capital. Corporates kept buying when banks and governments did not, so build the account list of industrials by name and sell to the whole committee, finance and procurement included. If your product improves grid reliability, storage economics or power availability, lead with that in every piece of sales material.

$20M to $100M in revenue

Runway is longer at your size, 24 months at the median above $50M, and the exit is in view. 89% of exits are acquisitions, mostly small bolt-ons by incumbents. The buyer you sell to today is the most likely acquirer, so positioning as the product line an incumbent is missing is a decision to make now. Debt is a quarter of climate funding and available to companies with cash flow; the story has to hold up for a lender as well as an equity investor. At this size, founder-held marketing strategy is usually the ceiling, and the question is who owns it.

How this page was built

Every figure comes from a primary report or the publisher's own release, and each is linked. Where the only accessible version is a secondary summary, the link is flagged. Survey-based figures carry their sample size and field dates where the publisher gives them. Figures from vendors with a commercial interest in the finding are noted. Numbers that could not be traced to a document are left out. The page was last updated in October 2026 and is revised when a source publishes new data.

Questions

Is there a benchmark for climate tech marketing spend?
Not a public one. The nearest reference is Gartner's 7.8% of revenue across industries, drawn mostly from companies over $1B. That is why the benchmark survey below exists.
Why is there so much funding data on a marketing page?
Because in 2026 the round is priced on commercial evidence, and commercial evidence is what marketing produces between rounds. The capital numbers set the clock marketing works against.
What is the commercial gap?
What separates a company that has demonstrated its technology from one that can sell it repeatedly: a chosen segment, a buyer who can be named, a sales cycle that is measured, and revenue that can carry the company between rounds. Most climate companies close the technical gap first and discover the commercial one afterward.
How often is this updated?
When the underlying reports update. Most of the sources above publish annually or quarterly; the page carries the date of its last revision at the top.
